Surgery
The Cat Hospital of Madison offers a wide range of special procedures and the latest in monitoring equipment while your cat is anesthetized.
Many clients are concerned about anesthesia. Before any patient is anesthetized a blood panel is performed to screen for any "red flags" which may affect the way your cat responds to anesthesia. This allows us to either make changes to our previously discussed anesthesia plan and re-tailor it for your cat's specific needs or schedule the procedure for a later time once values are normal.
The following is a list of parameters that are routinely monitored:
- Pulse Oximetry (oxygen levels in the blood)
- Heartrate
- Blood pressure
- Body temperature
- ECG (electrocardiogram; measures the electrical activity of the heart)
- End Tidal CO2 (this determines if your cat is breathing appropriately under anesthesia or needs mechanical ventilation).
All patients are placed on a circulating warm water heating tray to maintain body temperature while anesthetized.
Anyone who has ever had surgery knows how terrible it is to wake up painful, nauseas, and cold. Any patient undergoing a surgical procedure receives a specific pain management protocol that has been tested for its efficacy at minimizing pain for that procedure. Anti-emetics (anti-nausea) medication is also given before the surgical procedure is performed as well. Our goal is for our patients to wake up extremely comfortable from whatever procedure no matter how involved.
